With its Banners of Bereavement, its Bastions of Basalt

An eerie, decadent poem by Stuart Merrill, with my attempted translation. Any criticism is welcome!

Où son désir d'enfer hanta l'âme fervente ;

From
LES FASTES
by Stuart Merrill.
Chez Léon Vanier, Paris, 1891.

And this shall come to pass in a country of the twilight, where the sun, low and purple on the horizon where fawn-coloured volcanoes bloom, shall foretell the heavy season of the heat wave.

A flaming river shall unroll its waves between the archipelagoes of lotus and the shore, where the ancient chimera, in the bitter heat of dream, shall twist in vain her flanks wet with tears.

From time to time, by night, with black hull and funereal rigging, with a cry of drums and voices, a galley will exalt with flags on the stern the golden simulacra of a monster from the gloom.

Then, unfurling a sail to the wind of evil spells, and beating from the distance in a barbarous rhythm the echo of its oars and epithalamia, it will sail away, heavy with dead children

Towards the City of love and terror, whose name we never speak without sacraments, for fear of trespassing into those impure moments when the desire for hell haunts the fervent soul;

The City, there with its banners of bereavement, its bastions of basalt and its morgues, will ensnare with its voices of lute and organ the weary steps and the haggard stares of the Damned.

And when the heavy season of the heat wave arrives, the volcanoes, bright with fawn-coloured blooms, will make howl with horror, there, on the low horizon, Sodom, the Red City of the twilight.
